One of
the oldest continuous environmental studies in North America, Coweeta is based in
the eastern deciduous forest of the southern Appalachian Mountains, and
the centerpiece of a long-term
cooperation between the University of Georgia and the
USDA Forest Service.
Funded
by the National Science Foundation, Coweeta LTER has evolved from a site-based to a site- and region-based project centering on the
effects of disturbance and environmental gradients on biogeochemical
cycling, and the underlying watershed ecosystem processes that
regulate and respond to those ecological cycles.

complete Coweeta LTER data holdings in searchable catalogs.
Core & Long-Term Data Sets May Be Accessed Via The Data Catalog Link
Above.
Core data comprises data collections, normally long-term, that represent
studies central to Coweeta LTER's primary scientific research.
Publications
Publication, dissertations, theses - dating from 1928, over 1300
citations and over 1200 complete publications online.
Cross-site
Synthesis
Interdisciplinary research on the
interaction between biophysical and socioeconomic systems across regional,
national and oceanic boundaries.
COGENT: GIS Data
The Coweeta Geographic Network (COGENT)
houses
GIS data covering the 54,000 square kilometer range of the southern
Appalachian region.
Researcher Global Search
Mine research, data, and publications by individual researcher. NSF
Biographical Sketches are also provided and include contact information and

The
precedent of including students in all aspects of the field and laboratory
research and publication of results has been established since 1937,
when the first Coweeta graduate student produced their doctoral
dissertation.

Coweeta LTER scientists and staff provide middle school, high school, and
community college students "hands on" field and laboratory research
experience. The variety of ecosystems included in the LTER network,
coupled with the ongoing research, realizes the great potential in having
Coweeta serve as a learning environment for students of all levels.
