The Little Tennessee River drains 2,225 mi² in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee to the Gulf of Mexico via the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.  The headwaters are located in Rabun County, Georgia from where the river flows north into Macon County, North Carolina.  Major tributaries include the Nantahala, Cheoah, Oconaluftee, Tuckasegee, Cullasaja and Cartoogechaye. 

Several important Coweeta LTER research projects are located in the Little Tennessee River Basin including changes in river channel morphology and bottomland sedimentation patterns, the interaction of litter quality, microclimate, and biota in soils and streams, and the relation of climatic and site controls on forest form and function.

The Little Tennessee Collection contains the core GIS data set for these various projects along with supporting instructions and metadata.
