Ecology in the southern Appalachians.

Introduction:  Welcome to the Coweeta LTER program and to this guide for visiting researchers at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. Coweeta has a long-standing policy of allowing research by visiting scientists as evidenced by numerous publications by researchers other than our Coweeta LTER collaborators.

To initiate research projects at Coweeta:  Please contact Brian Kloeppel or Jim Vose and submit an online site use / metadata form. It is our policy to allow research at Coweeta that does not conflict with ongoing research in space, time, or topic. In addition, proposed project methods must avoid negative impacts to organisms, sites, and streams. Submitted site use metadata forms may be reviewed by pertinent researchers at Coweeta in addition to Jim Vose and Brian Kloeppel. Feel free to contact us regarding any research project questions that you may have.

Researchers interested in conducting research at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory should contact:

Resources:

Following is an overview of some of the resources available online to researchers.  Since 1937, Coweeta LTER has supported over two hundred topics of research.  Coweeta researchers have generated over 1200 publications.  You can now search through and view 1100 of these complete publications online.  You can also search through 225 Coweeta LTER graduate theses and dissertations, dating from 1937.

You can view biographical sketches of each of the Coweeta LTER Project Investigators, and access all of their online data, publications, graduate theses and dissertations and associated species and samples.

We feature a number of special collections that include demographics, species collections (species list I and species list II), sample archives and monthly climate data

Recognizing that GIS is a critical component to ecological research over the next decade, Coweeta LTER has made a commitment to creating a GIS catalog for the southern Appalachians.  You can locate GIS data by region (Coweeta Basin, Little Tennessee, or French Broad River collections), or by type (DEM, DRG, DOQ or Historic Boundary Files)  Extensive landcover classifications will also be coming online in late 2004 and 2005.
