The value of farm products sold represents all products sold from the farm, or the approximate total of the gross cash income of the farm. In general, the value of the sales of livestock, livestock products, nursery and greenhouse products, and forest products is for the calendar year 1949, while the value of the various crops sold is for the crop year immediately preceding the census.

Farm product value - 1959
The total values of farm products sold were obtained by addition of reported or estimated values for all products sold from the farm. All sales relate to one year's farm operations. Crop sales are for crops harvested during the crop year, whether the crops were actually sold immediately after harvest or placed in storage for later sale, while sales of livestock and livestock products relate to the calendar year, regardless of when the livestock or products were raised or produced.

Farm product value - 1982
The value of products sold by farms (any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year) represents the gross market value before taxes and production expenses of all agricultural products sold or removed from the farm in 1982. This includes sales by the operator as well as the value of any shares received by partners, landlords, contractors, or others associated with the operation. In addition, it includes the loan value received in 1982 for placing commodities in the Commodity Credit Corporation loan program. The value of products sold was collected from all operators. However, if the operator failed to report, estimates were made based on the amount of crops harvested or the livestock or poultry inventory sold.

Farm product value - 1987
The value of products sold by farms (any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year) represents the gross market value before taxes and production expenses of all agricultural products sold or removed from the farm in 1987. Data may include sales from crops produced in earlier years and exclude some crops produced in 1987, but held in storage. The total value of products sold includes sales by the operator as well as the value of any shares received by partners, landlords, contractors, or others associated with the operation. In addition, it includes receipts from placing commodities in the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) loan program of 1987. The value of products sold was requested of all operators; however, if the operator failed to report this information, estimates were made based on the amount of crops harvested, livestock or poultry inventory, or number sold.
