Service
establishments - 1940
The count of service establishments includes those establishments reporting total receipts of more than $100 for the year 1939. An establishment is a recognizable place of business (and therefore excludes businesses conducted from the residence of the proprietor without a sign or other means of identification). Each unit of a chain is considered a separate establishment. A place of business classified as a service establishment derived fifty percent or more of its revenue from the sale of service. Services include: personal service establishments (e.g. barber shops, beauty parlors); establishments rendering service to businesses (e.g. credit bureaus, collection agencies, advertising agencies); services allied to transportation; automotive repairs and services; other repair services; custom industries; and miscellaneous services (e.g. circulating libraries, landscape gardening).
