Service wages - 1940
Annual payroll includes all forms of compensation, such as salaries, wages, commissions, bonuses, vacation allowances, sick-leave pay paid during the year to all employees, including paid executives of corporations. The compensation of proprietors or firm members of unincorporated businesses, however, was excluded. Payments, in kind, such as free meals and lodging, were excluded. Payroll is reported before deductions for Social Security, income tax, insurance, union dues, etc.
