- 1940
Total operating receipts include receipts: for service; from sale of merchandise (after deduction of returned goods and allowances) and of meals and from fountain; and from other sources. Sales taxes, either local, state, or federal, collected from the individual customers and paid directly by the establishment to the taxing agency, are included in receipts.

They include receipts from customers for services rendered and merchandise sold during 1958 whether or not payment was received in 1958. They exclude local and state sales taxes and federal excise taxes collected directly from customers and paid directly to a local, state, or federal tax agency.

Receipts are net after deductions for refunds and allowances for merchandise returned by customers. They exclude sales, occupancy, admissions, or other taxes collected from customers and remitted directly to a local, state, or federal tax agency.
